Our bakery and pet-friendly cafe was inspired by the works of James Herriot, also called “Uncle James” by our founder, Mrs. Marjorie Pumphrey. We believe that community is best fostered around the table where old and young can share stories and wisdom over a slice of pie.
We also value the bond of people and pets which is why we’ve designed our space to accommodate our well mannered four-legged friends in the covered outdoor garden.
All our bakes are homemade with the freshest ingredients from local Yorkshire farmers. We’re thankful to partner with them to provide fresh, seasonal farm-to-table ingredients for all our pies.
Whether you are in town for the weekend or longer, we invite you to pop in to find delicious crusts and delightful community.

Founder & Benefactress
Mrs Pumphrey
The grand lady herself welcomes you to the town of Darrowby, in the dales of Yorkshire. Her family estate is not far off and can be toured by appointment. She has a beautiful lawn where she hosts cricket matches for our village team.
If you are lucky enough to receive an invitation to one of her house parties, you can be sure she will be a marvelous host. She’s authorized her cooks to share the best of her kitchen and gardens with us here at Pumphrey Pies.
Pekingese Pups Foundation
Tricki Woo
Of all creatures great and small, Mrs Pumphrey loved her precious Pekingese the most. The foundation supports rescues that specialize in small breeds to rehome them with loving families.
20% of each purchase of Tricki Woo’s Tasty Treats is donated to the Pekingese Pups Foundation

“It is the only competitive activity of any type, other than perhaps baking, in which you can dress in white from head to toe and be as clean at the end of the day as you were at the beginning.”
― Bill Bryson, In a Sunburned Country

We are delighted to sponsor the post game picnic for our village cricket team!

The Yorkshire Dales
Two parks contain treks that set off across rolling hills. Or enjoy the lovely dales following rivers past Yorkshire farms dotted with stone walled barns and fences. Film locations can be found in the villages of Thirsk, Grassington, Skipton, and Hawes.
